About
Angela Ippolito-Cottam
Licensed Funeral Director & Founder of AIC Wellness
I know the weight of The Black Suit because I’ve worn it for 30 years.
For three decades, I lived the reality of “silent endurance.” I served families during their most vulnerable moments while quietly carrying the physiological toll that comes with constant exposure to grief and trauma. Like most in our field, I believed that staying strong for others meant ignoring the signals my own body was sending.
I’ve navigated the sleepless nights, the intense pressure of being “on” 24/7, and the burnout that “just part of the job.”
The Shift: From Survival to Regulation
A turning point came for me in 2019. I realized that “holding it together” was actually keeping my body in a state of chronic high-alert. My search for a sustainable way to lead and live led me to the science of Nervous System Regulation.
What I discovered changed everything: our profession isn’t just emotionally demanding—it is nervous-system demanding. The compassion fatigue and “shutdown” we experience aren’t personal failings; they’re biological responses to a career spent in the high-stress environment of death care.
My Mission: The Regulated Responder
Through AIC Wellness and Behind the Black Suit, I provide funeral professionals with evidence-based tools to shift out of “survival mode” and back into a state of grounded authority.
I believe the people who care for grieving families deserve sanctuary, too. My work is dedicated to changing the industry standard from “pushing through” to sustainable well-being.
You provide a sacred service to your community. You deserve a life that feels peaceful — both in and out of The Black Suit.
